Checking out the movies opening this week I am intrigued by the next offering from Mr. Will Ferrell - Land of the Lost. Not because I think it will be the least bit entertaining or even passable but because I think the success of this picture holds the key for a Krofft brothers resurgence.
Any child of the 70's knows the Sid and Marty Krofft brand of Saturday morning kids shows. The shows normally had wild psychedelic colors, non sensical plots, and basically included scenes from their latest acid flashback.
However I figure if this film, which was revamped from an action-adventure during it's TV run to a comedy-adventure to suit the Ferrell demo, pulls in major bank the whole Krofft vault will be open to a mind-numbing amount of possibilities.
Here are my choices:
ELECTRA WOMAN and DYNA GIRL : This feminine superhero combo poked fun at the 60's Batman series. As if the Batusi wasn't embarrassing enough. But they were ground breaking in their day, since the only female heroine there was was a scantily clad buxom Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman. Girl power indeed.
Do it as a serious action movie with Charlize Theron as the more formal Electra Woman and maybe a Rachel McAdams as Dyna Girl. Don't forget you need a Tech guy to play Frank Heflin at the "Electra Base". I think Ed Harris will do nicely, gruff but you can believe he's a scientist.
There are a host of villains to chose from; Ali Baba, The Spider Lady or even the Empress of Evil. I'd go with Clay Aiken as the maniacal - Glitter Rock.
LIDSVILLE : Bear with me because the plot is slightly --- out there, man.
A teenage boy falls into the hat of a magician and arrives in Lidsville, a land of living hats. Horatio J. HooDoo is the villain flying about zapping hats and claiming Hat checks.
This has to be a Pixar type computer animated family fun fest. Angus T. Jones voices the lead and Neil Patrick Harris is the magic man. I'm still not sure who plays Raunchy Rabbit and Rah-Rah the Football Helmet though.
H.R. PUFFNSTUFF: The next movie to be green lit if Lost is a hit.
A young boy named Jimmy (Michael Cera) arrives in Living Island with dancing trees and a helpful Dragon named H.R. Puffnstuff (Jonah Hill). The boat is controlled by Wilhelmina W. Witchiepoo (Glenn Close) who tries to steal Jimmy's Magic Flute Freddy (voiced by Eddie Murphy).
It's an action, comedy/whimsical adventure. Start thinking sequel.
