When I saw this preview before "Gone Baby Gone" last week I was actually pretty excited to see Fanboys. It has a great premise. Four nerds that worship at the altar of Star Wars make the long trip across country to break into Skywalker Ranch to see a cut of Episode One, six months early.
Not bad. Star Wars has one of the truly devoted followings, so much so that there are grown men and women who make their own Stormtrooper outfits and march in a unit. That's either devotion or you have plenty of spare time to crush rebellions.
But these boys don't just go out of fandom. A sick member of the group may not make it before the movie premieres. So they hop into a rusted old van, with R2-D2 on the roof, and head west.
So, what was a promising concept is just beaten down by cliche after cliche of the common road movie. The gang gets put in jail, the van breaks down, they end up at a gay bar, and the hot chick actually wants one of the dorks. Not even cameos from a host of stars; from Billy Dee to Princess Leia or even Seth Rogen doing his best Eddie Murphy can seem to give this any momentum. (He has 3 roles in this one)
If you are a fan of Star Wars you will want to check this out but in the end you'll get Ewoks when you were wishing for Wookies.
